13 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him. 14 And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach, 15 And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:
Mark 3:13-15: Verse-by-Verse Analysis
Verse 13: “And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.”
Jesus goes up a mountain. This setting is significant. Mountains often symbolize a place of revelation and divine encounter in the Bible. Jesus calls those he wants. This shows his authority and intentionality. The chosen ones respond and come to him. Their obedience is immediate.
Verse 14: “And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,”
Jesus appoints twelve individuals. The number twelve is symbolic, representing the twelve tribes of Israel. This signifies a new spiritual leadership. The primary purpose is for them to be with Jesus. This close relationship is foundational. He also intends to send them out to preach. Their mission is to spread his teachings.
Verse 15: “And to have power to heal sicknesses, and to cast out devils:”
Jesus grants them authority. This power includes healing sicknesses. It also includes casting out demons. These acts demonstrate the kingdom of God. They show Jesus’ dominion over physical and spiritual realms. The disciples are equipped for their mission.
