Mark 4:14-20
14 The sower sows the word.
15 And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.
16 These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness;
17 and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble.
18 Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word,
19 and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.
20 But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.
Mark 4:14-20: Verse-by-Verse Analysis
Verse 14: “The sower sows the word.”
Jesus begins by explaining that the sower represents anyone who spreads the word of God. The “word” is the message of the Kingdom of God.
Verse 15: “And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts.”
Here, Jesus describes those who hear the word but do not understand it. Satan quickly removes the word from their hearts, preventing it from taking root.
Verse 16: “These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness;”
This verse refers to people who receive the word with joy but lack depth. Their initial enthusiasm is not enough to sustain them.
Verse 17: “and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble.”
These individuals fall away when faced with difficulties or persecution. Their faith is shallow and cannot withstand challenges.
Verse 18: “Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word,”
Jesus speaks of those who hear the word but are surrounded by distractions and temptations.
Verse 19: “and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.”
The word is choked by worldly concerns, wealth, and desires. These distractions prevent the word from bearing fruit in their lives.
Verse 20: “But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”
Finally, Jesus describes those who hear, accept, and act on the word. Their lives produce abundant fruit, demonstrating the power of the word when it is truly embraced.
