Mark 4:16-17

16 And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;

17 And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.

Mark 4:16-17: Verse-by-Verse Analysis

Verse 16: “And these are they likewise which are sown on stony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive it with gladness;”

This verse describes people who hear the word of God and accept it with joy. The “stony ground” symbolizes a heart that is not deeply receptive. These individuals are enthusiastic at first. They are quick to embrace the message. However, their acceptance is superficial. Their joy is real but shallow. They lack depth in their faith.

Verse 17: “And have no root in themselves, and so endure but for a time: afterward, when affliction or persecution ariseth for the word’s sake, immediately they are offended.”

This verse explains the consequence of having no root. Without a strong foundation, their faith is temporary. When challenges arise, their faith falters. Affliction and persecution test their commitment. Because their faith is shallow, they quickly fall away. They are “offended,” meaning they stumble and abandon their belief. This shows the importance of a deep, rooted faith.
